AIR COMPRESSOR FILTER REGULATORS

Filter regulators are often overlooked when purchasing an air compressor and air tools to go with it.  However, air filters and regulators are extremely important in any compressed air set up. A regulator allows the user to set the output pressure to the correct level for any equipment being run in the compressed air system.

Take a look at Fiacs range of air compressors for example, their belt driven models all supply 10 bar (145 psi) pressure.  Most air tools should be operated at less, most commonly 70 – 90 psi.  Without a pressure regulator fitted in the system, too much pressure is being delivered to the air equipment.  At best this can cause excessive wear to the tool and at worst can make it lethal!

Water can be a problem in compressed air lines.  During the compression of air, the air increases in temperature.  As this air travels through the system, the air cools causing moisture to form.  This water from condensation can then get to the air tool or equipment which can cause problems.  This is particularly the case in applications such as paint spraying and breathing air supply.  A filter or aqua purge can dramatically reduce moisture in the air line.  An aqua purge filters air to a very small level, suitable for paint spraying and air fed masks.  A standard filter regulator filters out water very well, suitable for general air tool use.

TOP TIP:  Mount the air filter regulator as far from the compressor as possible to ensure the air is cooled before going through the filter.

Another consideration is purchasing a filter regulator lubricator.  These add oil as an aerosol into the air line, supplying the air tools with oil to keep them lubricated.  A good investment to ensure maximum service life of your air tools.
