WELDER GENERATORS

Welder generators or generator welders are very popular in the industry, particularly among fabricators, on site workers and mobile welders. A portable welder generator offers the user the opportunity to weld in locations where power may not be available. In some cases, the amount of power required to weld in an application may not be present and an engine driven welder may be the solution in these instances. For example, in pipe welding situations, power may be present, but not enough to run a 400 amp welding machine!

Generator Power

The auxiliary power supplied by these sets can be used to run other tools required on site, such as grinders, lighting etc. Auxiliary power from the generator side of the machine can be in the form of 110V, 230V and 415V depending on the generator welder and can come in a variety of power outputs. Another point to consider is whether both power and welding current are to be used at the same time. Some of the smaller machines such as the SIP P200W-AC will either weld or produce AC auxiliary power. Other generator welders, such as the Mosa TS series produce AC power whilst welding.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) is featured on the generator side of some machines meaning the AC output is regulated to avoid spikes and troughs of power. This is a function which is required when running many welding machines, computers and other sensitive equipment.
Ranging from small, lightweight and portable welder generators, to sets on wheels, right up to large units to be mounted in a van or on a trailer, most applications are catered for. Kohler engine petrol welder generators and Honda welder generators producing either AC or DC welding currents are produced by SIP group, a company with over 50 years in the field of producing industrial equipment. Slightly more expensive in the range are the Italian made Mosa selection of machines, being either Honda engine driven or diesel Yanmar, Kohler or Perkins engines.

Petrol or Diesel Welder Generators?

Petrol welders are the cheaper of the welder generators and are generally lighter, which can be beneficial for on site work in remote areas. Conversely, diesel welder generators are likely to offer a longer service life, have longer running times and are cheaper to run. In the larger of the diesel machines, there is the option of 3000 RPM air cooled machines or 1500 RPM water cooled engines. Again, the air cooled machines are generally smaller and lighter whilst the water cooled gensets are heavier. However, the slower running speed of the water cooled engines tend to offer longer lifespans and offer higher duty cycles due to the increased cooling efficiency. In fact, TBWS have supplied water cooled welder generators to the warmer climes of the Caribbean, needing better cooling capabilities.

Welding Processes with a Welder Generator

Most commonly used for stick welding (SMAW – shielded metal arc welding), some machines can also be used for scratch start TIG welding (GTAW – gas tungsten arc welding). With the use of a MIG wire feeder certain welding generators can be used for MIG (GMAW – gas metal arc welding and FCAW – flux cored arc welding). MIG welding applications are particularly useful in tasks where a high production rate is required such as hard facing of digger buckets etc. Some manufacturers MIG wire feed units require the power source (the engine driven welder) to produce both constant current and constant voltage (CC/CV). AC or DC welding current?

Touched on slightly earlier in this category, some welding generators offer AC (alternating current) welding current whilst others produce DC (direct current). Stick welding, mostly used when running a welding generator is polarity driven. The most favoured of the two by welders is DC stick welding. AC welding current is seen in the cheaper machines but is still functional and can be favoured in some welding applications.
DC MMA (Manual metal arc) welding produces a smoother and more stable arc in steel, with easier arc starting, less spatter and easier vertical up and overhead welding. By changing the polarity in DC welding it is possible to adjust penetration into the workpiece. DC positive polarity places more heat into the steel and hence more penetration. DC negative polarity results in less penetration and higher deposition rates due to more heat at the electrode. DC negative therefore, is useful when welding thinner material to prevent burn through.
AC polarity is effectively half DC positive and half DC negative. Some electrodes (such as 6011) require AC polarity and AC can be useful in situations where the metal is rusty and you require less penetration. AC can also be useful in situations where the material being welded is magnetic.
